Once a sleepy village, Torremolinos, a few miles south of Malaga on Spain’s Costa del Sol, is now large, vibrant and fast-paced. It’s a town of wide, sandy beaches and plenty of choice in the way of bars, restaurants and activities like watersports.

Popular with families and young singles alike, there may be a lot of development but it’s far from soulless. Stroll around the old La Carihuela fishing quarter, taking in the original cottages, for example. It’s a particularly quiet and pleasant walk in the early morning, but has a thoroughly Spanish feel any time of day.

If you’re coming here for some serious sun-worshipping, the biggest and most popular beaches are Playamar and Bajondillo. You can swim safely from both and enjoy a wide range of watersports.
