Holidays in Los Angeles

USA Main Guide | California Main Guide

Located on the west coast of the United States, on the Pacific shore of sunny California, Los Angeles is a large and vibrant city with a population of almost four million.

Los Angeles is the home of the movie industry, and also of many of its stars. Hollywood Boulevard, with its 'Walk of Fame' is known worldwide. Other famous landmarks include the famous 15m-high letters spelling out HOLLYWOOD, the Capitol Records Tower and the Chinese Theatre.

Activities

There is certainly plenty to do in Los Angeles. The beaches are a big draw of course, and you can find out whether Baywatch really is a true to life account of Californian beach culture. Take a stroll along Santa Monica Pier with its retro carnival attractions and excellent restaurants, or watch the babes and hunks at Venice Beach and Muscle Beach.

Many visitors like to see the mansions of the movie stars and see how the world's celebrities live. If that's your thing then you'll want to take a tour of Beverly Hills or Bel Air. Alternatively you can buy a map on almost any street corner and find your own way. West Los Angeles is also famous for its shopping, especially on Rodeo Drive.

For nightlife, your best bet is Sunset Strip, which is a section of Sunset Boulevard. There is a tremendous variety of clubs and bars to choose from, each with its own attractions on offer

If museums are your thing you will find plenty to choose from. Many have themes tied in to the city's movie industry such as the Hollywood Entertainment Museum and Hollywood Wax Museums, while others are dedicated to the sort of larger-than-life people and achievements that make great movies. There is the Hollywood Guinness World Records Museum and the Ripley's 'Believe It Or Not!' Museum.

Universal Studios is probably the biggest studio in the world, and also a major theme park. You can take a tour of the site and see sets from some classic movies – Back to the Future and Jurassic Park III to name just two. You will also encounter Jaws and King Kong, an earthquake and an avalanche. Other fun things at Universal Studios include live action stunts at 'Waterworld' and a realistic warehouse fire based on a scene from Backdraft.

Warner Bros Studios also offer tours, though this is more or a technical look at how great films are made. Informative rather than exciting, the tour is very good if you're a movie fan. You might be able to watch filming in progress.

Disneyland is worth a visit – or several. The park is enormous, and divided into eight 'lands' each with its own flavour. You can experience the Wild West, the fantasy world of Sleeping Beauty's Castle and the futuristic Space Mountain, to name just three. There is good shopping and dining to be had at Downtown Disney and there is a new addition to Disneyland, California Adventure, with even more rides.
