Phuket is a tropical island situated off the coast of Thailand. It is an extremely popular holiday destination with excellent beaches. Phuket is popular with those seeking sun and sea, and attracts a mix of holidaymakers. Some come for the party atmopsphere, some for a quiet romantic break. Phuket caters to all tastes.

The island is not very large; just 48km long (north to south) and 21km wide (east to west). It does have some very distinct regions though. The chain of mountains that runs north-south causes local variations in the weather. It may be raining in one area but there will be bright sunshine just a few km away.

Away from the mountain valleys the terrain is very varied with wide sandy beaches separated by cliffs and headlands. Inland there are plains and hills as well as tropical forests and mangrove swamps.

Phuket's climate is hot and moist, and subject to monsoon winds. It is wettest (very wet!) in May and October, drier and cooler in the high season – November to March. Even in the monsoon season (May to November), most days have rain only for a fairly brief period in the afternoon. This period is slightly less popular so prices tend to be a little lower.

Accommodation and Food

Phuket is a popular holiday destination and boasts a range of accommodation to suit all budgets. There are large and small hotels plus apartments to choose from. Traditional Thai cuisine is readily available, along with international dishes, as you might expect from such a cosmopolitan resort.

Activities

Popular activites on Phuket include sailing, diving and watersports. Many holidaymakers like to take a boat trip, perhaps to indulge in some big game fishing or maybe living aboard the boat for a few days on a diving cruise around the local islands.

The Andaman Sea to the west of Phuket is still being explored, and new dive sites are constantly being discovered. Experienced divers will enjoy the thrill of being one of the first explorers of a new region. The clear tropical seas around Phuket swarm with brightly coloured fishes and other marine life including coral gardens.

For adventure on the surface, sea kayaking offers a unique opportunity to explore the coastline, especially around Phang-nga Bay. Sharing a 2-person canoe with a guide, you can explore the hidden caves and inlets of the bay. The bay can also be visited on a range of boat trips ranging from short excursions to lengthier cruises aboard houseboats.

Thai boxing (Muay Thai) is extremely popular all across Thailand. In addition to being a contest between two superb athletes, a Muay Thai is more of a spectacle than many visitors might expect. Traditional music and ceremonies accompany each bout. The fights, held on Friday nights in Phuket town and sometimes in other areas, are extremely dramatic and violent, and may not appeal to all tastes.

Other extreme activites are available to visitors. As well as normal bungee jumping (as if there was anything 'normal' about leaping off a platform with a cord tied to your ankle!), Phuket also offers catapult bungee jumping. Wearing a special harness, you are catapulted up into the air by the bungee rope before becoming a human yo-yo. The lunatic fringe will love this one!

Those with any adrenaline left in their bodies can go karting on the 600m go-kart course.

For those preferring a gentler sport, Golf is popular on Phuket. There are three international courses built on the sites of old tin mines and a driving range plus a large minaitrue gold course. There is also a shooting range, which intriguingly is close to the snake farm where handlers teach what to do when encountering a snake in the wild and how to treat a bite, then apparently try to get one by putting on a show involving handling snakes in a rather alarming manner.

Animal encounters of a gentler sort are also available. Horse and elephant rides are available at several locations.
