Holidays in Puerto Del Carmen
Spain Main Guide | Lanzarote Main Guide
Puerto del Carmen lies on the south-eastern side of Lanzarote, easternmost of the Canary Isles. Lanzarote is best known for its incredible volcanic landscape plus excellent weather and first-class beaches. The northern side of Lanzarote boasts several amazing natural spectacles such as the volcanic caves at Cueva de los Verdes and the Fire Mountains, a group of volcanoes and lava fields. The strangely beautiful landscape, resembling the surface of the moon, has inspired a number of unique developments. The most famous is the Jameos del Agua, a landscaped underground garden.
Just 15 minutes from the airport, Puerto del Carmen is a lively coastal resort with a range of bars and discos open late. Like other resorts on Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen consists mainly of low whitewashed buildings that blend into the landscape. The old part of the town has a number of fine restaurants and historic buildings, while the Central Atlantico is more of a party capital.
The resort offers a range of things to do, from watersports to submarine tours. Or you can just enjoy the excellent beaches and soak up the endless sun. For the more adventurous, there is go-karting and a quad bike safari.
Alternatively, you can head inland and experience Lanzarote's unique landscape, or visit its historical towns and villages.
Accommodation and Food
Puerto del Carmen offers a range of accommodation including bungalows, apartments and hotels of varying sizes and price ranges. Many hotels and apartment complexes have one or more swimming pools and other facilities including games rooms and restaurants.
Puerto del Carmen has a variety of eating places offering international choices in addition to Spanish tapas. English, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Mexican food is available, plus traditional Canarian dishes. Seafood is very popular on the island, often served with a distinctive local 'mojo' sauce. For a truly unique eating experience, take a trip to the Fire Mountains and enjoy a barbeque cooked over a volcanic outlet.
Activities
Puerto del Carmen is perfect for working on that tan. For those seeking a bit of privacy, perhaps to get an all-over tan, the region around the Papagayo Peninsula has a number of secluded coves. It lies just down the coast to the southwest. The beaches are excellent all over the island.
Watersports are a popular pastime, with scuba diving schools in town. Windsurfing and parascending are also on offer. For something a little more unusual, how about a submarine tour? And for those who think that holidays should be really hard work, there's mountain biking in the nearby Fire Mountains. Golf is also a popular choice, with several excellent courses on the island.
Lanzarote offers a wealth of experiences to those seeking local flavour. Sunday is market day in neighbouring Costa Teguise. The goods on offer range from local ceramics to cloth goods, and folk dances are performed in the town square by dancers dressed in traditional costume. Inland can be found many traditional Canarian villages and towns. One such is Teguise, once the capital of the island. Today it is little more than a village, but the archaic buildings and weekly market are worth a look.
Inland from Puerto del Carmen lies the town of Tahiche. Tahiche is the home of the Manrique Foundation, dedicated to the works of the landscape artist Cesar Manrique.
Manrique's house is partially underground, using part of a network of volcanic caves. The Foundation is home to a number of pieces of Picasso's work as well as Manrique's. Manrique also created a number of monuments which can be seen around the island.
Lanzarote can at first seem dry and desolate, but in fact it has its very own natural charm. The locals practice a very unusual kind of farming which involves creating a crescent-shaped pit filled with volcanic ash. These 'Zocos' are used to grow vines, and from their produce comes a distinctive sweet wine.
About 30km from Puerto del Carmen lies Timanfaya National Park, where visitors can experience the incredible volcanic wilderness close-up. In the north of the island lies Guatiza, home to a cactus garden designed by Cesar Manrique. Blending nature with art, the garden has over 1000 species of cactus.
