Holidays in Playa Del Ingles
Spain Main Guide | Gran Canaria Main Guide
Playa Des Ingles is located on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, capital of the Canary Isles. It has the best weather on the island; sunshine is near-constant though it occasionally rains quite heavily. The island has very distinct weather zones; drier in the south and cooler in the north. Average temperatures range from 15ºC in winter to 25ºC in the summer.
The capital, Las Palmas, hosts a 4-week carnival in February and has an opera season in March and April. The June to September period is particularly popular with younger visitors headed to Playa des Ingles to party. There is a strong gay/lesbian scene.
Hot weather and great beaches are obvious attractions, as is the party scene. Golf is another major attraction. Gran Canaria has half a dozen golfing facilities dotted about the island. Many of them are resorts in their own right.
Car hire is available, but more adventurous spirits might prefer to hire a motorcycle or quad bike to get around. Alternatively, taxis are plentiful, though the drivers are not inclined to pick up sand-covered sunbathers. The local bus service is good and cheap. A bus ride to Las Palmas, the capital, takes around an hour.
Buses are also available to Puerto Rico and Puerto de Morgan. The road is cut into the cliffs, so the journey is not for the faint-hearted. Boat trips run between the two ports at various times during the day. The two port towns are very attractive and dolphins can often be seen in the waters.
Accommodation includes hotels from 5-star to 2-star rated and apartment complexes. Many of these are a fair way from the beach – up to a kilometre in some cases. Many hotels have their own pool along with other facilities including restaurants, gyms and supermarkets.
Food is variable in Playa des Ingles. The best is very good but it is wise to be choosy. There is little in the way of distinctive local cuisine, though fresh fish is popular and usually good. Almost everything is pan fried or grilled, often with fresh locally-grown salad.
There are a number of speciality restaurants in town, offering delicacies including traditional British Yorkshire Pudding and gravy.
Playa Des Ingles offers a range of watersports including water-skiing and windsurfing, and there is a large waterpark at Aqua Sur. For those who prefer to loaf about on the beach, there are plenty to choose from. Beaches are numbered and have their own theme; some are nudist beaches, some gay, and some just sandy paradise.
If you feel the need to go shopping, it is wise to pick your times. Many shops close for siesta about midday. Before lunchtime and after about 5PM you can browse the local shops which include many perfumeries as well as gift shops selling jewellery, pottery and similar goods.
The Yumbo centre is a combination of shopping mall and entertainment centre. It boasts a range of bars, restaurants, duty-free shops, and supermarkets. It is a popular destination with tourists. Late-night facilities cater mainly to gay men, with dozens of gay bars opening after midnight.
A range of planned excursions are available, some of which cater mainly to gay and lesbian groups.
For those seeking to broaden their minds, Palmitos Park offers the chance to discover a wide range of birds, while the Museo Elder features interactive displays. For those who truly want to meet nature in the raw, camel rides across the dunes promise a wholly new experience.
