Holidays in Blanes
Spain Main Guide
Blanes is located at the mouth of the river Tordera on the border of Girona province in Catalonia, a region of north-eastern Spain. The resort lies between the cliffs to the north and the fine beaches that front the town. Historic ruins overlook the scene, while the headland above Blanes is the site for botanical gardens.
The area is known as the Costa Brava, or 'Wild Coast' for good reason. In between the excellent beaches lie dramatic rock formations and hidden coves. Catalonia is popular with golfers, with 9 major courses in the region. The PGA Catalunya course is considered to be one of the top ten in Europe.
Catalonia is famous for its tradition and history. Visitors can get a taste of old Spain joining in the traditional Sardana, a dance performed every week in neighbouring Lloret da Mar, or go exploring the little villages and towns of the area. For even more culture, Girona has an impressive Gothic cathedral, which is well worth a visit. Barcelona also has a wealth of history in addition to art galleries, impressive architecture and of course the chance to go shopping.
Blanes offers a range of apartments, aparthotels and hotels to choose from. For those who prefer to do more for themselves, there are also a number of campsites. Most hotels offer a range of extras including swimming pools, gyms, sports facilities and entertainment for adults and children. It is not uncommon for hotels and aparthotels in the region to require gentlemen to wear long trousers to dinner.
Blanes offers food from all over the world, including traditional Catalonian cuisine which includes fresh seafood brought in by local fishermen. The region is also famous for its wines, adding to the eating-out experience. A most unusual meal can be had at Castle Valtordera, where mediaeval feasts are held on a regular basis.
Activities
Blanes has an excellent beach and marina. For those who want to soak up the sun, there are plenty of opportunities. Alternatively you can take a walk along the promenade with its ponds and gardens. Visitors can head into the Catalonian countryside in search of spectacular scenery or a glimpse of Spain as it used to be. Dominated by the Pyrenees nearby, the local countryside is actually quite varied, with a range of sights on offer. Two small mountains (166m and 269m high) offer a challenge to those inclined in that direction.
Naturalists, or those seeking a quiet place for a relaxing walk might visit the botanical gardens are, with over 7000 species including cacti and trees from around the world on display. The town has a number of fascinating historical sites including castle ruins, towers, churches and chapels.
Visits to Barcelona and Girona are well worth the trip, combining shopping and eating out with history and culture. Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and unique architecture will interest many visitors, while Girona has its own little slice of history in the form of the old Jewish Quarter.
Night life is not as vibrant as in nearby Lloret da Mar, Calella and Estarit, but there is an array of discos, bars and restaurants to suit most tastes. Ardent shoppers will enjoy the weekly market in town. There is also an early-morning fruit and vegetable market for those who take self-catering seriously.
