Vilamoura is a region rather than a specific town. It is located about 30 minutes' drive from Faro in the Algarve. The region receives about 3000 hours of sunshine a year. Vilamoura is the largest holiday complex in Europe, and contains everything you could want.

Vilamoura contains a variety of terrain, ranging from excellent beaches to pine forests. The Marina is a focal point, offering shops, bars, restaurants and discos as well as a cinema and casino. The nightlife is vibrant and varied.

The region offers a range of sporting activities including watersports, golf, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting, or for those interested in history there are Roman remains and more recent historical relics.

Accommodation and Food

As you might expect, there is a range of accommodation available. Hotels, aparthotels and apartment complexes are all available, often with extra features such as swimming pools, restaurants and sports facilities. Self-catering is not a problem, though many shops tend to have an over-inflated impression of themselves – 'supermarkets' are often just little shops with relatively little choice, so it pays to learn where to shop.

Vilamoura is a major holiday destination and is very cosmopolitan, with a more international than Portuguese feeling to it. International cuisine is readily available, along with traditional Portuguese dishes. Most towns have a good selection of bars and restaurants to choose from. Local wine if often very cheap, or your taste might run to brandymel, a sweet liqueur made with brandy and honey.

Activities

Vilamoura has no less than six golf courses, and hosts a range of major events including the Vilamoura Festival of Golf. Other sporting activities include tennis, clay pigeon shooting and lawn bowls. There is also a riding school. Along the coast you can indulge in watersports including sailing and big game fishing, or just relax on the beaches.

Vilamoura has been inhabited since Roman times and before, and you can see relics of this past around the area. There is a preserved Roman site and historical museum plus several impressive churches from various periods in history.

If night life is your thing there are plenty of clubs, and the casino has cabaret to keep you entertained. Shoppers might want to visit the administrative capital of Loulé for a browse.

The Algarve is not too big to get around and see the sights outside Vilamoura. Each of the local towns and regions has its own unique attractions. The Big One waterpark has various aquatic attractions and other entertainment for all the family or for a less hands-on marine experience there is the Zoomarine Marine Park, with dolphins, sea lions and sharks.
