Holidays in Albufeira
Portugal Main Guide | Algarve Main Guide
Albufeira is located in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. The climate is excellent, the beaches superb. The Algarve is popular with golfers and surfers, and anyone seeking a relaxing holiday in the sun.
Albufeira offers the best of all worlds. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants in town, and a lively nightlife. Alternatively, you can get away from it all in Montechoro just 1.5km away or head into Praia d'Oura for more bustle. Nearby Quinta da Balaia is also popular with shoppers and those seeking a quiet drink or meal in the daytime. After sundown the town has a busy nightlife.
Getting about is not a problem. There is a good bus service with three routes covering most of the places you would want to go. There is also a tourist road-train.
Accommodation and Food
As you might expect, there is a range of accommodation available. Hotels, aparthotels and apartment complexes are all available, often with extra features such as swimming pools, restaurants and sports facilities. Some hotels and complexes have entertainment and live music in the evenings.
Self-catering is not a problem, though many shops tend to have an over-inflated impression of themselves – 'supermarkets' are often just little shops with relatively little choice, so it pays to learn where to shop.
The Algarve is a major holiday destination and is very cosmopolitan. International cuisine is readily available, along with traditional Portuguese dishes. Albufeira has several Indian restaurants, and seafood is also very popular.
Most towns have a good selection of bars and restaurants to choose from. Local wine if often very cheap, or your taste might run to brandymel, a sweet liqueur made with brandy and honey.
Activities
Albufeira has a range of sporting activities on offer including golf, watersports, horse riding and tennis.
For those with a taste for culture and history, Albufeira will not disappoint. There are several impressive churches and other historic buildings in town, with differing architecture and each with its own story. There is also an archeological museum which contains relics salvaged from many older buildings. The remains of the castle are worth a visit. This was the last Moorish stronghold to fall during the Reconquest of Portugal. There are regular exhibitions at the art gallery.
Albufeira hosts a lot of free live music and entertainment in the Old Town Square. Attractions include Flamenco dancing, rock and jazz music. Elsewhere in town you might encounter pipe bands, mimes and 'statue' artists, plus possibly a puppet show. If you go at the right time of year you might be able to take part in a festival such as the Fishermen's Festival or the Feast of St Vicente de Albufeira.
Shoppers will want to visit 'The Strip'. This stretch of road boasts numerous shops catering to tourists. The Strip is noisy and bustling and perhaps not to everyone's taste, but it is certainly an experience.
