Holidays in Porto
Portugal Main Guide | Algarve Main Guide
Oporto, or Porto as it is known to the Portuguese, is the most important city in the north of Portugal. The city makes an ideal base to explore the various regions of Northern Portugal.
Just to the north is the Minho region, a coastal area with excellent beaches and many popular resorts. The region’s towns have a wealth of history and culture to discover. Some of the great houses of Minho now offer bed and breakfast, combining luxurious accommodation with the chance to visit Portugal’s grand past.
Porto lies close to the river Douro, which has been made artificially navigable for much of its length. Boat trips to the Douro region are popular, winding through vine-covered hills where humans have lived since prehistoric times. The Douro region has many castles and country houses as well as historic religious buildings.
To the north of the Douro region, and a little more distant, is the Trás-os-Montes region. This area is popular for its culture and for outdoor activities such as canoeing and hiking as well as golf and other sports.
The city of Porto is listed as a World Heritage Site. It has many old churches and other buildings displaying a range of architectural styles from the city’s long history plus fascinating museums and plenty of good restaurants and cafes.
Accommodation and Food
As with any large city, Porto has a range of accommodation available to suit a variety of budgets. The city has four 5-star hotels as well as facilities suited to those on a tighter budget.
International cuisine is readily available in Porto as well as traditional Portuguese fare. Seafood is popular, along with more exotic offerings such as Tripas a moda do Porto. Not for the squeamish, this dish is made from the entrails of cattle.
The Porto region is of course most famous for its wine. Port is made from the grapes of the Douro valley and aged in barrels with brandy to create something quite unique. If you’ve never tried Port, a trip to Porto is the perfect opportunity.
Activities
Porto has many historic attractions including the Castelo do Queijo, a 17 th-Century fort. There are also several fine churches and religious buildings. There are also some fine museums displaying art, literature and the history of Portugal.
If you want to chill out and relax there are two good beaches, Praia da Luz and Praia da Gondarem, and some very nice parks and gardens. The Jardim do Palacio de Cristal has a sports centre and (in summer) a funfair as well as gardens, while the Parque do Fundacao de Serralves contains an art museum in addition to its natural attractions.
The city has plenty of good restaurants and varied nightlife ranging from karaoke to live music and dance clubs. For kids, there is the Porto Planetarium and a children’s amusement park.
Like any big modern city, Porto offers you the chance to spend hours browsing for souvenirs or local handicrafts, or shopping in the big modern malls.
