Quite possibly the most famous city in the world, Rome is the capital of Italy. It is both a monument to the past and a vibrant modern city. Rome is a romantic destination with fairly sedate nightlife. Romans prefer to eat a meal, sip a long drink outside a bar or stroll the streets to visiting a nightclub, though there are clubs if you look for them.
Rome is not the great shopping Mecca that Milan is, but there are still plenty of places to browse and buy. Whether you are looking for designer clothes, souvenirs or obscure books, Rome has something to offer in its malls, boutiques and quiet little stores.
Accommodation and Food
Rome has a good variety of accommodation on offer. There are grand and luxurious hotels as well as budget establishments, though prices are higher than average across the board. Most hotels are located in the central area of the city. It is worth booking early as hotels tend to be very busy.
Italians like to eat late, often around 9PM. However, most restaurants (and nearly all that cater to the tourist trade) start serving around 7PM. Restaurants tend to be a little more expensive in the tourist areas; if you take the time to look around you can usually find somewhere both attractive and reasonably priced.
The cuisine on offer ranges from the expected pizza and pasta to traditional Italian meals as well as fast food and international dishes. Some of the more upmarket restaurants tend to have long waits for a table, especially in places popular with the celebrity crowd.
Activities
One of Rome's hidden treasures is the preserved ancient town of Ostia Antica. Originally a trading centre the town was abandoned and buried in silt from the River Tiber. When the site was excavated, it was found that much of the town had been preserved by the mud. In Ostia Antica you can see original Roman mosaics and frescoes as well as buildings, showing how the ancient masters of Italy lived their lives.
In Rome itself there are many historical sights to see. The most obvious is the Forum, where the leaders of ancient Rome made their world-changing decisions. More recent medieval and renaissance buildings can be seen as you stroll through the Centro Storico, giving some idea just how long Rome has been a centre for world affairs. You could also visit the Vatican, centre of the Catholic Church for centuries.
Rome has many fine museums displaying sculpture, art and history, including restored ancient Roman houses and public buildings. Rome has so much history and culture that you simply cannot help but encounter historical attractions, museums and galleries wherever you go.
If you like opera, music or theatre, there are plenty of options. Performances are held in theatres and churches, and in the open air in parks and gardens. Exactly what is on varies from week to week. A weekly magazine, Roma c'è, contains full listings and has an English-language section in the back.
If you feel the need to explore outside the city, you can hire a car or take public transport. Both train and bus services are good and cheap. The coast and scenic inland hills are both easily reachable in a short time. There are many sites of historic interest close to Rome. The town of Frascati is worth a visit if you are a wine lover, and Tivoli is very nice. Many of the other towns receive few visitors and are very quiet.
