Lying on the Bay of Naples, the Neapolitan Riviera in Italy has been a popular holiday destination since Roman times. It boats several resorts, each with different characteristics.

Amalfi was founded in Roman times. It lies at the end of the Mulini valley, atop coastal cliffs. Amalfi's days of splendour as the first of Italy's Maritime Republics are gone, but many relics remain of the city's long history. The 11 th-Century cathedral is particularly interesting. It has been rebuilt and altered over the centuries and shows a mix of styles. The town also has a Maritime Museum and a Map Museum, reflecting its past as a maritime trading centre.

Majori, with its beach of sand and pebbles, tends to appeal to more mature holidaymakers, especially couples. Surrounded by hills covered in lemon trees, Majori is a market town with a good beach.

Minori, just along the coast from Majori, is a small fishing village. Boat trips from the harbour are popular.

Piano de Sorrento is a busy resort with pebbly beaches. The resort is a few minutes' car or train journey from Sorrento. If you want a larger beach, Meta di Sorrento is just 1.5km away.

Sant Agnello is fairly quiet, though it does have a decent selection of bars and clubs. It is close enough to visit Sorrento.

Sorrento is a lively resort close to Rome and Pompeii. The main beach is extremely popular. Even the entry fee does not deter visitors. There are other, less accessible beaches if you want somewhere quieter to relax. Sorrento has a fascinating museum of local history and crafts as well as many other historical attractions.

Accommodation and Food

The resorts of the Neapolitan Riviera receive large numbers of visitors each year and can cater to all budgets. Hotels range from grand 5-star facilities to more modest hostelries. Apartments and bed & breakfast accommodation are also available.

Italy is world-famous for its excellent food and wine. Everyone knows about pasta, but there is more to Italian cuisine than that. Fish, chicken and rabbit dishes are favourites, often cooked with excellent Italian wines. Some of the resorts of the Neapolitan Riviera are quite commercialised and have numbers of fast-food outlets as well as international cuisine on offer, but if you go to Italy you really should try out authentic Italian food!

Activities

The Neapolitan Riviera has a lovely climate and some good beaches. It is possible to spend your entire holiday relaxing at the coast. If you want to explore a little more widely there is a good local train service and car hire is readily available.

In Sorrento, the Archeological Museum of Sorrento Peninsula deals with the history of the region. A visit will explain a little more about the region and enhance your enjoyment of the local sights. The Antiquarium Aequano is another good historical museum. The Antiquarium contains exhibits dating back to 700BC.

The remains of the city of Pompeii, destroyed in a volcanic eruption in AD79, are close enough to visit. Not only can you learn about the Roman way of life here but the views across the Bay of Naples are excellent.

The Riviera is not known for exciting watersports, but there are options if you feel the need to be active. These include boating, tennis and bowling.
