Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region of Italy. It is well connected to other cities and regions by road, and boasts some very beautiful countryside. The climate is temperate with hot summers and rather windy winters.

The city dates from Roman times, and has been important in Italian affairs for centuries as well as gaining renown as a centre of culture and art. Many great artists and scientists have left their mark on the city. Their legacy is kept alive in the city's many fine museums.

Tourism is an important part of the local economy, and facilities are good. Crafts are also popular. Visitors can find excellent pottery and ceramics, lace and basketwork, shoes and jewellery as well as less portable items such as wrought-ironwork and reproduction furniture.

Accommodation and Food

The Tuscany region, and Florence in particular, receives large numbers of visitors each year. There is no shortage of accommodation including 1- to 5-star hotels, villas, apartments and bed and breakfast establishments.

Tuscany produces a range of good cheeses and Chianti wine. Grilled meat and beans are popular components of local cuisine along with rabbit, boar and deer. Florentine restaurants tend to serve traditional food from all over Italy as well as the local specialities.

Activities

Florence is an old city with a wealth of art and culture. The architecture reflects the city's age and status. The Palazzo Vecchio, begun in 1299, is worth a visit. The palace stands as a museum to the city's illustrious past and holds a number of famous statues. The Academy Gallery is another good place to see famous sculpture. Michelangelo's 'David' is there along with others of the great artist's works. More of Michelangelo's work can be seen at the gothic cathedral.

Ardent shoppers can find a wide range of local crafts in the shops and markets of the city. The San Lorenzo Market is particularly famous for crafts and souvenirs but there are several other very good markets to browse and wander in.

The nightlife in Florence is good, with many good clubs and bars. Many are located close together in the centre of town. There are a number of themed pubs including the ubiquitous Irish pubs but also English, Spanish and American-themed bars. The city is very beautiful at night; walking between venues is a pleasure in itself.

It would be hard to get tired of such a beautiful city, but if you feel the need to explore further, there are several good destinations for day trips reachable by hire car or public transport. These include Lucca, with its defences and Roman racetrack, Siena and Arezzo with their famous frescoes, and Pisa with its legendary tower. Or you could explore the countryside and villages of Chianti wine country and maybe try a bottle or two along the way.
