Budapest, capital of Hungary, was once two towns, Buda and Pest, lying on opposite banks of the river Danube. They merged in 1873 but retain their different characteristics. Pest is a major centre for business and commerce and home to the majority of shops, restaurants and nightlife, while Buda is quieter with more historical attractions.
The climate is variable. In spring and summer it can be very hot indeed, but cold days are not unknown. It can sometimes rain quite heavily towards the end of the day, so it pays to be prepared.
Budapest has a wide range of hotels and other accommodation available. There are three large 5-star hotels and numerous 4- and 3-star facilities in the city. Budget hotels and hostels are also on offer for those not wanting to spend quite so much. A number of private apartments are also on offer, typically suited to accommodating 2-3 people.
International cuisine is readily available, but most visitors will want to sample traditional Hungarian dishes such as Goulash. Many dishes are very heavy on the meat side, which can be a shock to the system. One good option is to try an all-you-can-eat restaurant, which will allow you to decide what to sample and to try a range of dishes.
Activities
Buda Castle is well worth a visit. The area referred to as the 'castle' in fact includes some excellent restaurants, shops and the Royal Palace, which today houses three very impressive museums.
Margaret Island in the centre of the Danube is a large park containing traditional English, French and Japanese gardens. Cycling is not much of an option in most of Budapest due to pollution and the locals' rather exciting driving habits. Cars are banned from Margaret Island however, so exploring this, one of Budapest's most beautiful areas, on a bike is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Alternatively 4-weeled pedal vehicles are available for hire.
The Danube also offers the opportunity to take a boat trip or cruise, and there are coach tours to other parts of the country. If you want to see the city, take the cable car up to the top of Castle Hill. The walk back down is very pleasant.
There are more than 30 theatres in Budapest, including the Hungarian State Opera House, the Art Nouveau Academy of Music and Margaret Island Open-Air Stage. A wide range of events are on offer, though it is wise to book in advance for the major ones.
Grand Market Hall in Pest offers some excellent shopping opportunities alongside fascinating neo-Gothic architecture. Or if you feel the need for a rest, there are 24 spas and swimming pools in Budapest. 10 of them have medical or therapeutic treatments available.
Hungarians tend to drink privately or with close family and friends rather than in pubs and bars. There are plenty of bars and clubs but you are likely to meet other visitors rather than locals there.
