Located on the Greek island of Corfu, Sidari is a fast-growing coastal resort catering mainly to couples and families. It accommodates up to 14,000 people and is family-friendly with many facilities suitable for children. The resort is seasonal, since Corfu can be quite cold in the winter. July and August, on the other hand, can be extremely hot (30º and over).

Sidari covers a strip of coastline about 3km long and 1km wide, centring on two villages that have grown together as the area has become more popular. It lies on the road to Corfu Town and has a regular bus service there as well as to Kassiopi and San Stefanos. A secondary resort, at Canal d'Amour, lies nearby.

As you might expect from a coastal destination, Sidari offers a wide range of water sports including water skiing, paragliding and scuba diving; only jet skis are not available. There is also a waterslide park and many of the hotels have their own pool. Most hotel pools can be used for free, even by visitors not staying at the hotel.

Sidari has three beaches. The East Beach is close to the old fishing village and is not as well kept as the others. The middle beach takes the form of a long sandy bay while the West beach lies under the famous Canal d'Amour. This is a region of limestone cliffs which have been eroded into dozens of small inlets and coves. Some of these are very secluded and used for nude sunbathing.

Sidari only became a tourist destination in the early 1980s, and it is still growing. Some areas remain charmingly undeveloped. New facilities and activities appear every year.

A range of apartments and small hotels are available. Most accommodation is self-catering. Accommodation is generally fairly modest, though as the resort is developed more upmarket hotels are being constructed.

There are supermarkets in town, making self-catering simpler, or the more adventurous visitor might try the local shops in search of unusual ingredients.

Food

The resort offers a range of eating places to suit all tastes. The resort boasts English, Mexican, English and Chinese restaurants; some of which are quite big and can cater to large parties. Traditional Greek cuisine is of course also widely available, and eating follows the typical Greek pattern of a late lunch (after 2PM) and dinner very late (often after 10). Local food is good value for money.

Activities

It is virtually impossible to get away from the water in Sidari! In addition to the range of water sports and the attractive beaches, it is possible to rent a boat and go exploring the coves – or head off up or down the coast. Boat rental is by the hour and includes fuel. A mobile phone is provided with each boat for safety, and no license is needed.

There is no public transport in the town, but the resort is not very large so this is not a major problem. However, the town centre is not very pedestrian-friendly. Visitors can hire cars and bikes to get around, perhaps heading out of town for a while. Sidari lies 26km from Corfu Town and 7km from the resort of Roda. Closer to hand, it is possible to head into the hills that lie just inland.

The night life in Sidari is more sedate than some other resorts, but there is still a good selection of bars and night clubs offering music and karaoke, plus more traditional Greek bars for those seeking a quiet drink.
