Rhodes is the most popular of the Greek islands with tourists. It is also the sunniest, which may not be a coincidence! The climate is hot and dry in the summer and mild in winter. Rhodes has many excellent beaches, while inland the climate is cooler. The scenery is beautiful, with mountains and valleys interspersed with lush forests and olive groves.

Rhodes has a long history. You can find monuments and relics dating from ancient Greek and Roman times, or left behind by more recent conquerors, such as the Knights of St John and the Ottoman Empire.

The north-eastern region of Rhodes are very commercialised, catering to the vast numbers of tourists who come to the island each year. Elsewhere many areas are quiet, with sleepy villages and dirt roads.

The capital, Rhodes Town, lies on the northern tip of the island. There are three distinct segments of Rhodes Town: the ancient city, the medieval walled city and the modern city. The ancient city is largely buried under later developments but you can see traces of it at the Archeological Museum. The medieval city, on the other hand, is recognised as a World Heritage site and is well preserved. The modern city is less attractive than the older parts, though the nightlife is good. There is a scenic train ride available form outside the town hall, which takes in many of the best sites.

East Rhodes is the main tourist area other than Rhodes Town itself. There are several resorts along the road between Rhodes Town and Lindos. Lindos itself is a village of some 1500 people or so on the east coast. It is a very old settlement dating from 2500BC or before. The village contains several excellent historical attractions including the fortress of the knights of St John, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother Of God and the Acropolis. The views from the town are splendid.

The resort of Faliraki, 14km from Rhodes Town, is very popular with younger people seeking a beach and party holiday. Faliraki has some of the best nightlife in Greece, along with a range of watersports, extreme sports and other exciting activities.

Symi is worth a visit, especially if you like shopping. Among the attractive houses there is a fine market selling all manner of goods from sponges to spices and gold. You can get there by ferry from Lindos or Rhodes.

Inland there are many beautiful villages where the traditional way of life of Rhodes goes on unchanged. These villages, such as Embonas, Kritinia, Profillia, Monolithos, Agios Isidoros, Laerma, Mesanagros, Arnitha, Siana, Psinthos, Salako and Agia Eleousa, contain a wealth of historical attractions like castles and churches. They are also an excellent place to sample traditional Rhodian cuisine and wine.

The south of the island is largely undeveloped with poor roads. Tourist numbers are far lower in the south.

Accommodation and Food

Rhodes has many resorts catering to the enormous number of visitors it receives each year. There is no shortage of accommodation. Apartments, studios and a range of hotels are available to suit all budgets. Many hotels and complexes have their own swimming pool and other extras such as sports facilities.

You can find a range of cuisine on offer. Traditional Greek food is available in tavernas and restaurants, and all kinds of international cuisine is on offer. It is not hard to find Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Indian and European dishes. Many resorts are very mass-market oriented and have several fast-food outlets of various types. Others cater to particular nationalities. Traditional English roast dinners with Yorkshire pudding may seem incongruous in sunny Greece, but they are popular all the same.

Activities

Many people come to Rhodes to enjoy the beaches and spend their nights in the clubs. The resorts are well set up for this kind of activity, but if you're looking for something more varied you won't be disappointed.

In Rhodes Town, a wealth of cultural and historical attractions await discovery. Discover ancient and modern Greek culture in the historical and art museums, or visit the ancient walls and gates of the city. There is also a delightful park and the remains of an ancient theatre and athletic stadium where the Greeks held athletic contests in honour of the gods. There are several Byzantine churches and Crusader castles elsewhere on the island, in various states of repair.

The Aquarium of Rhodes is also worth a visit. It has a large population of Mediterranean sea life including corals, anemones, lobsters, turtles and octopi. There is also a museum of oceanography and sea life at the Aquarium.

The various resorts on the island have a good range of watersports available including wind surfing, yachting, wakeboarding and water skiing. There are several scuba diving centres and a number of good dive sites.

On land, you can find excitement in the form of bungee jumping and go-karting, or for something a little more relaxing there are riding schools nearby. If you want to get about, car and bike rental is easy enough in Rhodes Town.
