Holidays in Paleokastritsa
Greece Main Guide | Corfu Main Guide
Paleokastritsa lies on the west coast of Corfu, a Greek island lying 32km from the mainland. Some of the resorts on Corfu cater to those seeking a party vacation, while other areas are much more sedate. Paleokastritsa is one of the quieter, more laid-back resorts but can still get busy as day trips come in from elsewhere on Corfu to see the magnificent scenery.
Corfu can be quite cold in the winter. July and August, on the other hand, can be extremely hot (30º and over). If you intend to be very active it might be worth visiting in the cooler months.
Paleokastritsa is set in a scenic location above six bays with beautiful cool clear water. The resort caters to a range of visitors of all ages. Nearby is the clifftop monastery that shares the town's name. The monastery dates from the 13 th Century. It has a museum displaying holy relics and other religious items. The area hosts an annual festival combining religion and fun.
Not far outside the town lies a medieval fortress, Angelokastro, which has protected the locals through troubled times. Also close to Paleokastritsa is the village of Liapades, which is famous for its wine.
A range of apartments and hotels are available in Paleokastritsa. Facilities range from the luxurious to more modest. Whether you want full board in a hotel or a studio where you can do your own thing, Paleokastritsa has what you need.
Paleokastritsa is very cosmopolitan and has a range of restaurants, snack bars and other eating places serving a range of cuisine. Seafood, particularly lobster, is popular. Eating generally follows the typical Greek pattern of a late lunch (after 2PM) and dinner very late (often after 10). Local food is good value for money.
Activities
If you want to explore the island, car and bike hire is readily available. Corfu has beautiful scenery and wildlife to discover, along with picturesque villages where you can see the traditional way of life unfolding as it always has. Alternatively you can rent a boat and explore the coastline at your leisure. There is also a glass-bottomed boat available for excursions.
The monastery is well worth a look. Its exhibits show how religion has played an important part in the history of the island. There is also the skeleton of a curious 'sea monster' killed by fishermen in the 19 th Century.
About 25 km away, Corfu Town has a number of museums and historical attractions including a small but very good archeological museum and a museum of ancient art.
Nightlife in Paleokastritsa is more sedate than in Corfu Town, though there is still a good selection of bars as well as more traditional Greek Tavernas where you can enjoy a quiet drink.
