Holidays in Kardemena
Greece Main Guide | Kos Main Guide
Kardamena is located on the southern side of the Greek island of Kos. It is one of the best-known and liveliest resorts on the island and is popular as a party-holiday destination. The original fishing village has largely disappeared under modern developments, though the harbour and village square remain.
Kardamena boasts some excellent beaches with clear waters ideal for swimming and watersports. The beaches get very crowded near the resort but the crowds thin as you move further out.
The nightlife is good, with clubs open until 3:30AM during the week and 6AM at the weekend, and there are plenty of watersports on offer.
Accommodation and Food
There is no shortage of accommodation in Kardamena. Apartments, studios and a range of hotels are available to suit all budgets. Many hotels and complexes have their own swimming pool and other extras such as sports facilities.
Kardamena has plenty of places to eat. Fast food is commonest, but if you take the time to look there are some nice restaurants serving international and traditional Greek cuisine. Kos is the greenest of the Dodecanese islands, producing plenty of excellent fresh vegetables and fruits. Everyone has heard of Kos lettuce, but that's just the beginning. With these first-class ingredients it is no surprise that local cuisine is truly excellent.
Kos also produces a range of red and white wines as well as fruit spirits, which might make a welcome change.
Activities
Most visitors to Kardamena come for the nightlife and the beaches. If you find that you want something more, there is plenty to do.
Kardamena has a large watersports centre boasting everything from pedeloes to jet skis and water-skiing to parascending. You can also take a boat trip from the harbour and visit the nearby islands or explore the coast.
Exploring further afield, a trip to the capital, Kos Town, is worth the effort. Kos Town hosts the only museum on the island; the Archeological Museum of Kos. The museum displays a range of artefacts including mosaics and statues dating from ancient and Roman times. Find out how these important civilisations made their mark on the ancient Mediterranean world.
In Kos Town you can visit the Castle of the Knights, constructed in the 14 th Century by the Knights of St John, or play a variety of sports. There are also plenty of opportunities for socialising. Spend a pleasant afternoon drinking coffee in a café and watching the world go by, or party all night in one of the many nightclubs.
Kos also has some very impressive churches and other religious buildings, some dating from as early as the 5 th Century. Not only are they interesting in their own right, these places are an ideal location for a peaceful or romantic walk, offering relaxation away from the bustle of the resorts.
A good way to see the island is to hire a bicycle and tour wherever you like. There are over 4000 bicycles available, so finding one should not be a problem. Head into the interior of the island and explore the peaceful villages and lush greens of the spectacular scenery, or look for souvenirs and gifts. Kos produces excellent local pottery and hand-woven rugs.
