Athens is the capital of Greece, with a population of some 5 million. The city has a vast history dating back thousands of years. As a result Athens has some of the world's most famous landmarks and temples and t he city's architecture is a fascinating mix of ancient and modern; classical and neoclassical buildings alongside modern tower blocks.

The climate is Mediterranean; mild in the winter and hot and dry in summer. There is little rainfall to spoil your holiday, and getting around the city is not a problem. There is a good bus and tram network and a new metro (tube train) system which has improved public transport considerably. Taxi provision has improved recently too. It is possible to get about by walking in some areas, especially around the main attractions. Away from the city centre, Athens is not as pedestrian-friendly.

Accommodation and Food

As with any big city, Athens has a range of accommodation available. Many hotels have a pool. It is worth choosing one that does if you think you will want to swim at some point during your holiday.

Athens has hundreds, perhaps thousands, of cafes and bars serving hundreds of types of coffee and of course ouzo. You can pass many a happy and relaxing hour sitting in a pavement café sampling the various drinks on offer and watching the people go by.

The city has a great variety of restaurants including fish and seafood restaurants, grills and Ouzeries, which specialise in delicacies accompanied by Ouzo. International cuisine is also available including fast food and pizza delivery.

Activities

Many of the main attractions in Athens are located in a fairly small area, making it easy to see the sights. The Acropolis is the most famous landmark in Athens and is well worth a visit. There is a museum on the site which contains a collection of relics from Greece's long history including sculptures and statues from the Acropolis and other temples. Other famous temples include the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which lies at the start of the pedestrian route to the Acropolis, and the Temple of Hephaestus.

The world-renowned National Archaeological Museum will interest history buffs. It contains exhibits from all over the Greek world from the stone age to late Roman times plus other collections including coins and sculptures from various periods. There are also Roman remains elsewhere in the city.

Other museums include the Train Museum, which contains railway-related artefacts from as early as 1884, and the War Museum of Greece, which contains exhibits from ancient and modern warfare. There are many others covering a range of subjects.

If you go to Athens, you really have to go shopping. Prices are good and the variety of stores is impressive. Fashion clothing is especially popular but you can also get souvenirs including puppets wearing traditional Greek dress and musical instruments such as bazouki.

For a taste of Greek culture, there are regular concerts and ballets at theatres and concert halls around the city. Alternatively you can see traditional Greek Folk dancing at Filopappos Hill in the evenings. Traditional music is played live in many tavernas around the city.

If you feel like travelling outside the city, take a metro ride to Piraeus or the bus to Rafina and a boat trip out to the islands. Alternatively, you can be at the beach in under an hour by public transport.
