Holidays in Lindos
Greece Main Guide | Rhodes Main Guide
Lindos is the most popular holiday destination on the Greek island of Rhodes. The village lies on the eastern side of the island south of the capital, Rhodes Town. The eastern coast is the most commercialised area of the island, with several coastal resorts between Lindos and the capital. Elsewhere many areas are quiet, with sleepy villages and dirt roads.
Rhodes is the sunniest of the Greek islands, with many excellent beaches. The climate is hot and dry in the summer and mild in winter. It is especially hot and sunny at the coast while inland the climate is cooler. The scenery is beautiful, with mountains and valleys interspersed with lush forests and olive groves.
Lindos is popular for its beaches and nightlife. Virtually everyone in the town is employed in the tourist industry. The village has many historic attractions including an Acropolis and the castle of the Knights of St John. The old village is very picturesque with its winding streets and traditional architecture.
Accommodation and Food
Lindos receives large numbers of visitors every year, and is equipped to cater to them. There is no shortage of accommodation. Apartments, studios and a range of hotels are available to suit all budgets. Many hotels and complexes have their own swimming pool and other extras such as sports facilities.
You can find a range of cuisine on offer. Traditional Greek food is available in tavernas and restaurants, and all kinds of international cuisine is on offer. It is not hard to find Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Indian and European dishes in Lindos or neighbouring resorts. Many resorts are very mass-market oriented and have several fast-food outlets of various types. Others cater to particular nationalities. Traditional English roast dinners with Yorkshire pudding may seem incongruous in sunny Greece, but they are popular all the same.
Activities
Rhodes has a long history, which you can discover all around you. It was for many years the stronghold of the Knights of St John, who built many castles like the one that overlooks Lindos. The castle was built in the 14 th and 15 th Centuries, and gives access to the Acropolis. A visit not only reveals the power of the knights but also elements of Greek culture. There are sculptures at the Acropolis dating back 2000 years.
It is a short trip up the coast to the capital, Rhodes Town has three distinct segments: the ancient city, the medieval walled city and the modern city. The ancient city is largely buried under later developments but you can see traces of it at the Archeological Museum. The medieval city, on the other hand, is recognised as a World Heritage site and is well preserved. The modern city is less attractive than the older parts, though the nightlife is good. There is a scenic train ride available form outside the town hall, which takes in many of the best sites.
Also worth seeing at Rhodes Town is the ancient harbour, called Mandraki. It has three old windmills and a fortress for history buffs, or you could take a boat trip from the harbour.
Lindos has excellent nightlife, but for the very best Rhodes has to offer take a trip up the coast to Faliraki Bay. The bay has the best beaches for miles around and boasts the most vibrant nightlife on Rhodes – which is saying something!
