Paphos is located on the west coast of Cyprus. The site has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The Myceneans built a temple to Aphrodite there over 3000 years ago, and other civilizations have left their mark ever since.

Cyprus is a very beautiful island with a hot and sunny climate. The people are very welcoming to visitors. Cyprus has many kilometres of beaches and sea cliffs. Inland there is a large central plain with mountains to north and south of it.

Paphos is quieter than the hosts the famous (or notorious, depending on your viewpoint) 'party' resorts like Ayia Napa. It hosts the second international airport on the island. The region has several unspoiled natural attractions as well as many fine bars and restaurants.

Accommodation and Food

Paphos has many places to stay, ranging from 5-star hotels to much more modest accommodation. The resort can be quite busy in summer but is much quieter during the rest of the year.

International cuisine is readily available the in the restaurants and cafes of Paphos, but you really must try the traditional Greek and Cypriot dishes on offer. Traditional Cypriot cuisine includes Meze, which actually means 'mixture' and can include as many as thirty different dishes. Moussaka, kebabs and baklava are popular, along with a range of dishes involving fish, chicken and local vegetables.

Activities

Jeep Safaris are popular, though this may not be for the faint-hearted. The local drivers know the roads very well and tend to career about the mountain roads with what seems like reckless abandon. Hiring your own jeep might be an option since it gives you the choice of where to go and how long to spend there. The Troodos Mountains in the centre of the island have a wide range of wildlife, wild flowers and impressive scenery to see, and little villages to explore.

Paphos has several excellent historical sites to visit. The Roman mosaics are particularly striking. Despite being 2000 years old these mosaics, where St Paul stood to preach, are in excellent condition. The 2 nd-Century theatre, partially restored, hosts events from time to time. Old Paphos, up the hill from the modern town, is a nice place to visit and see Cypriot life as it has always been.

For those seeking sport and adventure there are three golf courses within 30 minutes' travel. Along the coast there are a number of diving schools with dozens of excellent diving sites. More experienced divers can explore wrecks off the coast, which include ships sunk over 2000 years ago. Other watersports including sailing, water-skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing are available.

Much of the nightlife in Paphos is found on a single street, with several clubs and bars along it. Each has a different theme or style ranging from karaoke; up-to the minute and retro dance clubs to quieter bars, some with live music. Some features may come as a surprise, such as when a waiter in a Seriani's restaurant decides to balance several wine glasses on his head and dance around the room! Although not as lively as some other resorts, Paphos is varied enough to stay interesting.
