Ayia Napa is one of the main resorts on Cyprus, attracting about a third of the visitors that come to the island. With the best nightlife on Cyprus it is a popular destination with younger holidaymakers seeking a place to party. Ayia Napa is not well suited to relaxing family holidays.

Once a quiet fishing village, Ayia Napa has been developed over the years into a large urban area of clubs, bars and pubs. The climate is hot and sunny, attracting vast numbers of sunbathers to the very good but extremely crowded beach.

Away from the resort there are more secluded and quieter beaches to discover, or you can head out into the countryside to explore the plains and cool hills. Many small villages dot the landscape, offering an insight into the traditional Cypriot way of life.

Accommodation and Food

Ayia Napa is a very popular destination, which receives a large number of visitors each year. It has plenty of accommodation on offer to suit a range of budgets. Development has been ongoing for years and compliance with planning laws is a hit-and-miss proposition. This has created a somewhat chaotic layout which is accented by the crowds moving from one non-stop party to another.

There is plenty of international cuisine on offer. Ayia Napa has restaurants serving Arabic, Chinese, Indian and European dishes as well as fast food and seafood restaurants.

Cypriot food is excellent. The climate is ideal for fruit and vegetable growing, and the quality of produce is superlative. Traditional Cypriot cuisine includes Meze, which actually means 'mixture' and can include as many as thirty different dishes. Moussaka, kebabs and baklava are popular, along with a range of dishes involving fish, chicken and local vegetables. Cypriot coffee and wine are also very good.

Activities

The main reasons to come to Ayia Napa are to party and to catch the sun on the beach.

If the non-stop partying starts to wear you down, take a look at the 16 th Century Ayia Napa Monastery or the waterfront chapel of Agios Georgios. These islands of tranquillity may seem a little out of place amid the mayhem of Ayia Napa, but that might be just what you need.

To get away from it all or to find a less crowded beach, take the bus to Protaras, a quieter town in the southeast. Protaras has some of the best beaches in Cyprus plus watersports and some very good clubs and bars. The town of Paralimni also lies to the southeast. It has an open-air theatre and an interesting church which now serves as a museum. The shops offer a good range of local ceramics.

Boat trips from Ayia Napa run to Larnaca, Cape Greco and Famagusta.
