Located in the tropical northern area of Queensland, Cairns is a popular coastal resort offering the chance to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and numerous inland attractions.

Queensland has two World Heritage locations, the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. Inland, you will find a range of activities ranging from abseiling to shopping in the open-air markets. See koalas in the wild or feed dolphins at Tangalooma Island. And of course, there is the beach and the surf.

Diving on the Great Barrier Reef is an unforgettable experience. For experienced divers the outer reef offers a wealth of experiences, while less taxing dives are available at the islands and fringing reefs. There are 23 resorts on the mainland or on the islands offering diving holidays. Not all resorts cater for children.

Cruises are available from Cairns. Some are short trips to points of special interest along the coast or on the reef, with or without the chance to dive. There are also luxury cruises on offer, including week-long voyages among the islands.

Accommodation

Cairns is a major tourist destination and has a wide range of accommodation available. Facilities range from luxury hotels and apartment complexes to more modest guest houses and motels. Away from the city there are outback pubs and fishing lodges offering access to the wilder side of Queensland. Some visitors spend some or all of the vacation aboard a vessel rather than in a hotel on land.

Things To Do

The main attraction in Cairns is most certainly the Great Barrier Reef. Learn to dive among the fabulous corals, swimming with marine animals, turtles and hundreds of species of tropical fish. More experienced divers can explore the outer reef, with its many unique locations.

If you don't want to dive but would still like to experience the reef, there are underwater observatories, glass-bottomed boats and semi-submersibles available. Or you can see it all from the air aboard a helicopter or light aircraft. The coast also offers an array of watersports and of course the chance to relax on the excellent beaches.

The Wet Tropics Rainforest predates humanity by millions of years. It is a living showcase of incredible plant and animal life. Visitors can take a tour with a guide to point out the hidden sights, or ride above the jungle canopy on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. There is a good market at Kuranda for those who just have to go shopping, even in the middle of a rainforest!

There are even more natural wonders to explore at the Undara Volcanic National Park. There, the awesome power of a volcanic eruption some 200,000 years ago left giant lava tubes and hollow chambers behind as the lava poured out and ran towards the sea.

Those seeking adventure can find it inland, with white-water rafting at Tully or, for a change of pace, learn about the Aboriginal culture first-hand from the Tjapukai and Djabugay people.
