Occupying the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the region, and right in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic basks in a year-round tropical climate.
Whether you want your holiday to be romantic, adventurous, energetic or just plain magical, the Dominican Republic really is the holiday destination that has it all. This is a land of contrasts, home to the Caribbean’s lowest point and highest peak, and with an intoxicating blend of European, indigenous and African cultures, reflected in the country’s cuisine, art and music.
The charming cobbled streets of the capital, Santo Domingo, are just a short drive from rural villages or endless verdant sugar plantations. And, as for the beaches, the words ‘tropical paradise’ can’t really begin to describe the long, unspoilt stretches with aquamarine sea on one side and thick green palms fringing the other.
You’d be forgiven for wanting to alternate lazing on the dazzling white sand and dipping in the clear, enticing water all holiday long. But for those who enjoy active breaks, the Dominican Republic offers every conceivable water sport, from kitesurfing, and wakeboarding to windsurfing and much more.
If you can drag yourself away from the beach, you’ll find spectacular scenery, which you can enjoy on mountain biking tours for riders of all abilities, or guided hikes allowing you to take in the island’s richly diverse flora and fauna. If you’re on the north coast visit attractions such as the attractions as Damajagua’s 27 waterfalls.
And best of all is that this place has a name it more than lives up to: the Sunshine State has all the perfect weather, theme parks, golden beaches, water sports, lush green vegetation, lakes and white sandy beaches (for those of you who prefer white to golden!) you could hope for.
