With its rock-bottom prices, fantastic intermediate ski-ing and lively night-time partying, it’s no wonder that Borovets, Bulgaria’s oldest ski resort, is a magnet for winter holidaymakers.
Just one hour’s drive from the capital, Sofia, Borovets is on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains at the foot of Moussala, the country’s highest peak.
The resort boasts an excellent network of 15 lifts, including the six-person Yastrebets gondola, four chairlifts and 10 drag lifts, covering nearly 60km of piste. While beginners will appreciate the high level of English-speaking ski instruction, experienced skiers will be stretched on the more challenging runs.
Nestled among ancient pine forests, the resort was founded at the end of the nineteenth century as a place where kings could hunt.
