Barcelona is one of Europe’s most stylish and energetic cities, with an intoxicating (if exhausting) nightlife and some of the continent’s most distinctive architecture. One of the Med’s busiest ports, Spain’s second city is also its most cosmopolitan. As the capital of the region of Catalonia, it has its own unique character, history and language.
From Roman city to medieval trade centre, Barcelona has always been at the heart of things. Since Victorian times, this town has led the way in terms of art and style. It’s known above all for its incredible concentration of Gothic architecture, and for being home to some of the world’s most surreal buildings. Stroll around the medieval Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) of the Ciutat Vella (Old Town) and drink it all in.
You can’t come to Barcelona without visiting the basilica of the Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudi’s masterpiece which hits you between the eyeballs as you emerge from the Metro. Similar architecture is to be found in the Parc Güell, and in houses such as La Casa Batlló.
