It is claimed that Alanya was given to Cleopatra as a gift from Mark Anthony and this beautiful holiday destination certainly serves up plenty of romance. Alanya is a great mixture of the old and new, from the two bays you can see the wonderful Alanya Castle and the cities walls are still very evident. There is a mixture of new hotels and apartments combined with old Turkish cafes, boutiques and narrow streets. On top of this there are great beaches, restaurants that serve up traditional dishes as well as English and bars to enjoy late into the evening.
Whilst on holiday in Alanya you can enjoy two bays, Cleopatra beach and Alanya beach, both are mainly sandy but with some pebbles in places. Alanya beach is considered to be the most family-friendly as it is shallower in this area, the Cleopatra beach is considered to be quieter of the two.
Alanya holidays are popular with those who love to visit historical places and Alanya has this in abundance. Alanya's history goes back to Roman times, and the place has some fabulous sites to visit, Alanya Castle, The Red Tower and the Dock Yard are just a few places to see.
A visit to the Citadel is also well worth a visit, about 150 towers still stand tall as part of a well preserved double walled citadel. On the outer walls you can find ruins of mosques and on the inner walls are a ruined cistern and a Byzantine church.
A popular place for tourists in Alanya is the harbour, here you will find many boutiques that offer clothes, jewellery, handbags and paintings as well as many other bargains.
Amongst the attractions in Alanya is the Damlatas Cave, a collection of misshapen rock formations. Among them is the Dim Cave which has numerous waterfalls like structures and this area is also renowned for its healing powers.
If you can still can't get enough of the culture and history in Alanya then the Archaeology and Ethnography Museum is well worth a visit with many historical facts and exhibits that take you back to the Roman Times.
